Tire selection in the UAE should start with the vehicle manufacturer’s specification, not a brand ranking or an advertised price. The sidewall code provides the information needed to confirm size, load capacity, speed capability and production date.
Read the tire size
A marking such as 265/65 R17 identifies the nominal width, aspect ratio, radial construction and wheel diameter. Replacement tires should follow the approved sizes shown in the vehicle manual or door-jamb label.
Check load index and speed rating
The number and letter after the size indicate load index and speed rating. Both must meet or exceed the vehicle manufacturer’s requirement. This is particularly important for SUVs, vans and commercial vehicles carrying regular loads.
Understand the DOT date code
The final four digits of the DOT code show the week and year of manufacture. For example, 4325 means week 43 of 2025. The date is one factor in an inspection; storage conditions, sidewall condition, tread damage and the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance also matter.
Temperature, traction and treadwear markings
Some tires display UTQG ratings for temperature, traction and treadwear. These ratings can help compare products within the system, but they do not replace the vehicle’s required size, load and speed specifications.
Pressure checks in hot weather
Use the cold-tire pressure specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Check pressure before driving or after the vehicle has been parked long enough for the tires to cool. Do not reduce or increase pressure based on a generic summer rule.

- Cuts, cracks, bulges or exposed cords
- Repeated pressure loss
- Uneven wear or vibration
- Tread depth at or below the applicable limit
- Damage after an impact or puncture
Buying for fleets and professional users
Record the approved tire specification by VIN or fleet number, purchase from a traceable source and inspect delivered tires before fitting. Maintenance records should include pressure checks, rotations, repairs and replacement dates.
